A Western Byzantine Polarity: The Case of the Southern Adriatic Region
This session focuses on the Southern Adriatic region, addressing attention to Southern Italy, Albania and Greece in the Byzantine period. Studies on the high degree of interchange characterizing these territories are limited. Byzantine historical research has mainly analyzed the northern Adriatic territories. However, language and religion, food and societal organization, numismatics and material culture reveal the region to be a highly interconnected hub in the Byzantine period. The region is currently under study by diverse research groups, and this session will be the first major conference venue to convene them, offering the unique opportunity to develop a fruitful debate.
