How to Propose a Session

To encourage the integration of Byzantine studies within the North American scholarly community and highlight the contributions of Byzantine studies to broader academic discourses, the Mary Jaharis Center for Byzantine Art and Culture seeks proposals for sponsored panels at the annual meetings of North American professional organizations (e.g., American Academy of Religion, American Historical Association, Modern Language Assocation, Renaissance Society of America, etc.). We invite session proposals on any topic relevant to Byzantine studies.

For the 2024 Open Call, we will accept proposals for accepted panels that will be delivered during the 2024–2025 or proposals for panels that will be submitted during the 2024–2025 academic year. We will not accept proposals for conferences where we regularly sponsor sessions (i.e., Byzantine Studies Conference, International Congress on Medieval Studies). Preference may be given to sessions at conferences where topics in Byzantine studies are not frequently presented. 

This call is only open to scholars residing in North America. All panel participants must reside in North America.

Session proposals must be submitted through the Mary Jaharis Center website. The deadline for submission is December 1, 2024. Proposals should include:

• Title
• 300-word session abstract
• Session moderator and academic affiliation
• List or proposed list of session participants (presenters and chair)
• Organizer CV

Session organizers must actively participate in the panel either as a panelist or session chair. If a co-organzier is proposed for the session, the co-organizer must also give a paper in the session or chair the session.

Applicants will be contacted by mid-December about the status of their proposal. Further particulars regarding panel submission, call for papers, and sponsorship details will be determined by the rules governing the annual meeting where the panel is to be presented/proposed.

If the proposed session is accepted, the Mary Jaharis Center will reimburse a maximum of 5 session participants (presenters and session chair) up to $800 maximum. Funding is through reimbursement only; advance funding cannot be provided. Eligible expenses include conference registration, transportation, and food and lodging. Receipts are required for reimbursement. For scholars participating remotely, the Mary Jaharis Center will reimburse participants for conference registration.
