Publication Grants

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted online through the Mary Jaharis Center's Interfolio portal. Application materials will not be accepted via email or postal mail. Required documentation.

Mary Jaharis Center Publication Grants support book-length publications or major articles in the field of Byzantine studies broadly conceived. Grants are aimed at early career academics. Preference will be given to postdocs and assistant professors, though applications from non-tenure track faculty and associate and full professors will be considered. We encourage the submission of first-book projects.

Funding: For the 2025–2026 grant cycle, up to 2 grants of $3000 will be awarded.

Application Deadlines

Applications will be accepted between 1 November 2024 and 1 February 2025. Notifications will be made in late May 2025. Late applications will not be accepted.

Eligibility

Applicants applying for Mary Jaharis Center Publication Grants must be working on book-length publications or major articles. Books must be single-author manuscripts, either monographs or collections of essays by the author. Volumes of previously published essays and congress proceedings are not eligible. Articles must be at least 15,000 words. Publications must be published in English. Grants may be used to subsidize expenses not covered by the publisher or to fund research necessary for the completion of the manuscript.

Applicants applying for a subvention must have completed manuscripts and must be formally and unconditionally under contract with a recognized press of national or international stature. Examples of expenses suitable for consideration include photography/imaging, permissions, image acquisition and licensing, exceptional design requirements (e.g., maps, line drawings, charts, and tables), and multiple indexes.

Applicants applying for research funds must have well-established projects. Examples of expenses suitable for consideration include travel, photography/digital images, and microfilm.

Evaluation

Applications will be evaluated using the following criteria:

  • Significance: The extent to which the book will make an important contribution to the field of inquiry it addresses.
  • Approach: The extent to which the submitted description and text sample demonstrates clarity of methodological approach, argument, and writing.
  • Need: The extent to which the submitted material underlines the importance of the funding to the overall project.

Terms

  • Funds must be used between 1 July 2025 and 30 June 2026.
  • Names of recipients and their projects will be published on the MJC website.
  • Recipients will submit by 1 September 2026 a brief report (400–500 words) consisting of an abstract of the book and an explanation of how the grant money contributed/will contribute to its publication. The report will be posted on the MJC website.
  • Recipients will submit by 1 September 2026 an itemized list of the expenses covered by the grant.
  • Recipients will acknowledge the Mary Jaharis Center for Byzantine Art and Culture in the publication.
  • Funds awarded to international applicants may be subject to US tax withholding. International applicants will receive funds in US dollars via wire transfer.
  • Recipients receiving research funds will be expected to carry out the activities outlined in their project statement. Any significant divergence from the original proposal should be reported to the Mary Jaharis Center.

A complete application includes

  • Completed online application.
  • Full curriculum vitae of education, professional experience, honors, awards, and publications.
  • Description of the publication, not to exceed 1,000 words. The description should (1) explain the basic ideas or questions explored and the methodological approach and (2) clearly and explicitly indicate the significance of the publication and the audience(s) it engages. If the project is narrowly focused, the applicant should explain its potential implications for a wider community of scholars.

FOR SUBVENTIONS

  • For book-length publications: Partial manuscript including table of contents, complete list of images, illustrations, tables, indexes, etc., 1 representative chapter, and sample bibliography (5 pages).
  • For articles: Complete text of the article, list of images, illustrations, tables, indexes, etc., and bibliography.
  • A single PDF with the following components: (1) Signed, current contract with the publisher; (2) A letter from the publisher verifying that the manuscript is complete and explaining how the grant money will be used.
  • An itemized budget and explanation of the expenses to which the subvention would be applied.

FOR RESEARCH FUNDS

  • For book-length publications: Partial manuscript including working table of contents, working list of images, illustrations, tables, indexes, etc., 1 representative chapter, and sample bibliography (5 pages). 
  • For articles: Partial manuscript including working list of images, illustrations, tables, indexes, etc., representative section from the article (at least 5,000 words), and sample bibliography (1 page).
  • Project statement, not to exceed 500 words, explaining how the funds would be used.
  • Budget outlining the expenses that will be covered by the grant.
