Priests and Their Manuscripts in the Holy Land and Sinai, Austrian Academy of Sciences, November 8–10, 2023

Where did priests learn to read and write? What did they copy and where? How did their libraries look? What did they do with their books? Little is known about these topics, and a general overview is missing. By addressing these and related topics, this conference aims at shedding light on the social and cultural role of priests active in the Holy Land and Sinai during the Byzantine and immediate post-Byzantine period, and writing in the many languages of the Christian Orient.

The following speakers will present their research: Michele Bacci, Samuel Bauer, Georgios Boudalis, Tinatin Chronz, Daniel Galadza, Nina Glibetić, Ilias Nesseris, Denis Nosnitsin, Daniel Oltean, Adrian Pirtea, Ofer Pogorelsky, Dorothea Reule, Daniel K. Reynolds, Giulia Rossetto, Mariafrancesca Sgandurra, Nina Sietis, Natalia Smelova, Alexander Treiger, Maxim Venetskov, Vevian Zaki.

The conference is in person only.

PROGRAM

The event is organised in the framework of the project “Priests, Books and the Library at Saint Catherine’s (Sinai)”, funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF no. T 1192-G).
