The Managing Editor is an enthusiastic, organized, and detail-oriented member of the ANS publications program, responsible for managing and shepherding ANS publications projects from acceptance to publication. The Managing Editor exercises quality oversight of any outside contractors working on publications and liaises with our printers and distributors on matters regarding shipments, inventory, metadata, technical specifications, etc. Additionally, the Managing Editor will be able to copyedit, content edit, and/or typeset and lay out publications. This individual is the only employee 100% allocated to the publications program.
The American Numismatic Society has one of the most extensive academic numismatic publishing operations in the world, having published well over 150 books in the last 100+ years. The ANS publishes three periodicals: the American Journal of Numismatics (our flagship, peer-reviewed, annual journal, published since 1866), the Journal of Early American Numismatics (published semi-annually since 2018, and from 1960-2017 as the Colonial Newsletter), and the ANS Magazine (published quarterly, and since 2002). Presently, the ANS publishes two to three peer-reviewed monographs per year.
A bachelor’s degree is required and a master’s degree is preferred. Previous experience in publications is required. Ideally, the successful candidate will have experience editing, copyediting, and/or typesetting academic publications and have a background in numismatics, archaeology, classical studies, art history, history, or a related field.
Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat Pro, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe InDesign is critical, as is familiarity with standard conventions and processes in the academic publication process.
