The British Institute at Ankara supports, enables and encourages research in Türkiye and the Black Sea region in a wide range of fields including archaeology, ancient and modern history, heritage management, social sciences and contemporary issues in public policy and political sciences.
The BIAA offers a number of different funding opportunities, grants and awards to support academics at all stages of their career. Applications for the following opportunities are due April 17, 2024.
BIAA David Edwin Jameson Scholarship
The BIAA has established a scholarship of £1,000 in memory of David Edwin Jameson, who worked in Türkiye with the support of the Institute in 1961. The scholarship is intended to fund fieldwork relating to the study of the region during the Greek, Roman, or Byzantine periods. Applicants should be enrolled in a PhD programme at a recognised UK Higher Education Institution.
BIAA David French Scholarships
In memory of archaeologist Dr David French, Director of the British Institute at Ankara from 1968 to 1994. Two travel grants of up to £1,000 each are available to support undergraduate or postgraduate students to develop knowledge and understanding of the region’s history, geography, culture and environment. Applications relating to an individual’s first visit to Türkiye for study purposes will be particularly welcomed.
Applicants should be enrolled on a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD programme at a recognised UK Higher Education Institution. The fieldwork or other research activity for which support is sought may relate to any historical period up to and including contemporary Türkiye.
BIAA Doughty-Wylie Scholarships
Two grants of up to £1,000 each are available to support postgraduate students in any field of the arts, humanities and social sciences to participate in fieldwork or other research activity in Türkiye. In addition to the grant, the BIAA will offer successful applicants free accommodation at the BIAA hostel in Ankara.
Applicants should be British citizens enrolled on a Master’s or PhD programme at a recognised UK Higher Education Institution. The fieldwork or other research activity for which support is sought may relate to any historical period up to and including contemporary Türkiye.
Turkish and Black Sea Scholars’ Fund
Four Turkish and Black Sea Scholars’ Fund grants of up to £500 each are awarded to researchers wishing to travel to the UK to visit a recognised UK Higher Education Institution and further their research interests (e.g. studying a museum collection, using a university library and/or presenting papers at conferences/workshops). Grants are also awarded to researchers intending to travel to the Institute’s premises in Ankara to further their research interests by using the collections held at the BIAA’s centre for research excellence.
Grants are available to support scholars of postgraduate status and above from countries bordering the Black Sea. Research should be located within the field of the arts, humanities and the social sciences.
