The Department of Ancient Studies/Classics at Scripps College, a women’s liberal arts college with a strong interdisciplinary tradition, is looking to hire an Assistant Professor (tenure track) beginning July 1, 2024.

We seek a broadly trained candidate with a critical and creative eye on the study of antiquity and its connections with today’s world. Specialization is open, but we are particularly interested in candidates whose study of the ancient world extends beyond Greece and Rome (e.g., Ancient Near East) and/or whose work engages with reception studies. All candidates should demonstrate excellence in the teaching of Latin and/or ancient Greek.

In addition to mentoring students, supervising senior theses, and service at the college and in the department, the course load is 2-2. The department at Scripps forms part of the intercollegiate program in Ancient Studies/Classics at The Claremont Colleges (Pomona, Pitzer, Claremont McKenna). Participation in the Core Curriculum in Interdisciplinary Humanities, a series of required courses for first- and second-year students, is expected.

A Ph.D. in Ancient Studies/Classics (or a relevant discipline) is required by July 2024.
