Hymn for Great Compline, Second Boston Byzantine Music Festival
Cappella Romana performing “Hymn for Great Compline” at the second Boston Byzantine Music Festival, November 14–15, 2014. “Hymn for Great Compline” by Manuel Gazes the Lampadarios (early 15th century) is a two-part hymn that reflects the contemporary Western tradition of cantus planus binatim (plainchant twice). It is preserved in the Byzantine musical manuscript Athens 2401, written in the Peloponnesian port city of Patras.
