Mary Jaharis Center Project Grants support discrete and highly focused professional projects aimed at the conservation, preservation, and documentation of Byzantine archaeological sites and monuments dated from 300 CE to 1500 CE primarily in Greece and Turkey. Projects may be small stand-alone projects or discrete components of larger projects. Eligible projects might include archeological investigation, excavation, or survey; documentation, recovery, and analysis of at risk materials (e.g., architecture, mosaics, paintings in situ); and preservation (i.e., preventive measures, e.g., shelters, fences, walkways, water management) or conservation (i.e., physical hands-on treatments) of sites, buildings, or objects.

A complete application include

  • Completed online application. Application requires professional information about the applicant; a statement of the geographic coverage of the project, with geographic coordinates if appropriate; project title and abstract (no more than 200 words); information about permits and co-direction (if applicable) of the project; professional information about the primary personnel to be involved in the project; a description of the publication plan (no more than 200 words); for projects that will generate digital data, a brief data management plan explaining how data collected will be maintained, shared, and archived (no more than 200 words); a statement of the applicant’s qualifications to carry out the project (no more than 500 words); additional funding received for the project; a bibliography of no more than 10 relevant works.
  • Project Director’s full curriculum vitae of education, professional experience, honors, awards, and publications.
  • If applicable, Co-director’s full curriculum vitae of education, professional experience, honors, awards, and publications.
  • Project description of no more than 2,000–2,500 words. The description should include 1) the questions the project intends to answer and their importance, or for preservation/conservation projects, the site or monument that is the focus of the grant and its importance, 2) an explanation of the project’s design and methodology; for preservation/conservation projects, this should include information about techniques and materials to be used; 3) an explanation of the project timeline and activities; 4) a statement of the project’s expected outcomes; and 5) if the project is part of a larger, on-going project, a summary of the larger project’s history. Applicants are encouraged to review the stated evaluation criteria and address them in their application material.
  • Copies of the permits and/or authorizations for the project OR, if the permits have not yet been granted, an explanation of how and when the permit will be obtained, together with any supporting evidence (letters of support from foreign partners or agencies, etc.)
  • If the Project Director is not the primary permit holder, a letter of support from the primary permit holder.
  • For preservation/conservation projects, a condition report or condition assessment/survey.
  • For preservation/conservation projects, a statement (no more than 500 words) addressing how the intended outcomes will be sustained beyond the project timeframe.
  • Budget. A detailed, realistic budget for the total project. For projects that will receive additional funding or are part of larger projects, budget must specify items that will be funded by the Mary Jaharis Center Project Grant. Applicants must use budget template provided by the Mary Jaharis Center. Applicants are advised that a lack of budgetary detail will harm an application's chances. DOWNLOAD BUDGET TEMPLATE.   • Two confidential letters of recommendation. Referees must submit letters through Interfolio. Recommendations must be signed and submitted in English on official letterhead.
