Daily Life in Late Byzantine Letters (14th–15th centuries), 2023 Gustav Karlsson Lecture by Siren Çelik (Marmara University), Swedish Institute at Athens via Zoom, December 11, 2023, 6:00 pm (Athens)

The last centuries of the Byzantine Empire were times of political and socio-economic upheaval, as well as of intense cultural contacts between the Byzantines, the Latins and the Ottomans. Letters penned by the prominent literati of the era offer fascinating insights into daily life through a careful literary analysis. This talk will especially concentrate on some case studies from the letters of Demetrios Kydones and Manuel II Palaiologos. It will discuss their depictions of daily life such as houses, marketplaces, foos, clothing and daily routines, highlighting their literary functions in these texts.
