How to Apply

Applications must be submitted online through the Mary Jaharis Center's Interfolio portal. Application materials will not be accepted via email or postal mail. Required documentation.

Mary Jaharis Center Project Grants support discrete and highly focused professional projects aimed at the conservation, preservation, and documentation of Byzantine archaeological sites and monuments dated from 300 CE to 1500 CE primarily in Greece and Turkey. Projects may be small stand-alone projects or discrete components of larger projects. Eligible projects might include archeological investigation, excavation, or survey; documentation, recovery, and analysis of at risk materials (e.g., architecture, mosaics, paintings in situ); and preservation (i.e., preventive measures, e.g., shelters, fences, walkways, water management) or conservation (i.e., physical hands-on treatments) of sites, buildings, or objects.

Application Deadline

The portal for the next application cycle will open on 1 November 2024. Applications will be accepted between 1 November 2024 and 1 February 2025. Notifications will be made in May 2025. Late applications will not be accepted. Late recommendations will not be accepted.

Eligibility

Mary Jaharis Center Project Grants are limited to individuals holding suitable credentials (i.e., PhD or equivalent experience for archaeologists, MA/MS in the appropriate area for conservators). Project Grants will not be awarded to academic or other institutions.

Applicants must be the director or co-director of the proposed project. Applicants should be the primary permit holder for the project proposed. If the applicant is not the primary permit holder, the application should be accompanied by a letter of support from the primary permit holder. Permits must be obtained before funds are dispersed.

Mary Jaharis Center funds cannot be used toward overhead or indirect costs, the salaries of principal investigators, or the purchase of computers or other equipment. Project Grants are not meant purely for the purpose of travel, research toward a degree or the publication of catalogues, or library or archival research.

Evaluation

Applications will be evaluated using the following criteria:

  • Significance: The extent to which the proposed project will make an original and important contribution to the field of inquiry it addresses. In the case of preservation or conservation projects, the extent to which the focus and objectives of the proposed project documents, protects, and conserves important Byzantine archaeological sites and monuments from known and immediate destruction or increases accessibility to these sites, or emphasizes new scientific methods or the use of established methods in new and innovative ways.
  • Approach: The extent to which the project's design and methodology are clearly presented and appropriate for the proposed project.
  • Need: The extent to which the funding will make a significant contribution toward the completion or advancement of the project.

Terms

  • Funds must be used between 1 July 2024 and 30 June 2025. Permits must be obtained before funds are dispersed.
  • Names of recipients and their projects will be published on the MJC website.
  • Recipients will submit by 1 September 2025 a final report with a reconciled budget and documentation of expenditures. The report should include figures and be of a length suitable to provide a detailed summary of project findings or outcomes.
  • Recipients will submit by 1 September 2025 a brief report (400–500 words) with illustrations on the project. The report will be posted on the MJC website.
  • Formal publication of the project results is expected. Plans for publication should be included in the grant application.
  • Recipients will acknowledge the Mary Jaharis Center for Byzantine Art and Culture in any project publicity and in any publications resulting from the project.
  • Funds awarded to international applicants may be subject to US tax withholding. International applicants will receive funds in US dollars via wire transfer.
  • Recipients will be expected to carry out the activities outlined in their project description. Any significant divergence from the original proposal should be reported to the Mary Jaharis Center.

A complete application includes

  • Completed online application. Application requires professional information about the applicant; a statement of the geographic coverage of the project, with geographic coordinates if appropriate; project title and abstract (no more than 200 words); information about permits and co-direction (if applicable) of the project; professional information about the primary personnel to be involved in the project; a description of the publication plan (no more than 200 words); for projects that will generate digital data, a brief data management plan explaining how data collected will be maintained, shared, and archived (no more than 200 words); a statement of the applicant’s qualifications to carry out the project (no more than 500 words); additional funding received for the project; a bibliography of no more than 10 relevant works.
  • Project Director’s full curriculum vitae of education, professional experience, honors, awards, and publications.
  • If applicable, Co-director’s full curriculum vitae of education, professional experience, honors, awards, and publications.
  • Project description of no more than 2,500–3,000 words. The description should include 1) the questions the project intends to answer and their importance, or for preservation/conservation projects, the site or monument that is the focus of the grant and its importance, 2) an explanation of the projects design and methodology; for preservation/conservation projects, this should include information about techniques and materials to be used; 3) an explanation of the project timeline and activities; 4) a statement of the project’s expected outcomes; 5) if the project is part of a larger, on-going project, a summary of the larger project’s history; and 6) a description of the challenges to your project posed by the novel coronavirus pandemic and an explanation of how you would use the grant to overcome any necessary alterations to the project plan outlined in your application [section 6 not to exceed 500 words].
  • Copies of the permits and/or authorizations for the project OR, if the permits have not yet been granted, an explanation of how and when the permit will be obtained, together with any supporting evidence (letters of support from foreign partners or agencies, etc.)
  • If the Project Director is not the primary permit holder, a letter of support from the primary permit holder.
  • For preservation/conservation projects, a condition report or condition assessment/survey.
  • For preservation/conservation projects, a statement (no more than 500 words) addressing how the intended outcomes will be sustained beyond the project timeframe.
  • Budget. A detailed, realistic budget for the total project. For projects that will receive additional funding or are part of larger projects, budget must specify items that will be funded by the Mary Jaharis Center Project Grant.   • Two confidential letters of recommendation. Referees must submit letters through Interfolio. Recommendations must be signed and submitted in English on official letterhead.
