Mary Jaharis Center HCHC Faculty Conference Travel Grants are aimed at Hellenic College Holy Cross faculty pursuing research in any subject, discipline, or methodology related to Byzantine studies broadly conceived. Funds are meant to help defray the costs of presenting at professional meetings.

Application Deadlines

For meetings to be held between 1 September and 28 February, applications will be accepted from the 1 May through 1 June preceding the conference. Notifications will be made by 1 August.

For meetings to be held between 1 March and 31 August, applications will be accepted from 1 November through 1 December preceding the conference. Notifications will be made by 1 February.

If a conference date overlaps the end of one review period and the beginning of the next, submit an application for the grant period in which the actual presentation falls.

Faculty wishing to apply for this grant, should contact Brandie Ratliff, Director, Mary Jaharis Center for Byzantine Art and Culture at least two weeks before the application deadline.

Eligibility

Applicants must be tenure-eligible or tenured Hellenic College Holy Cross faculty members actively participating (e.g., reading a paper, organizing or chairing a session, or serving as a panelist) in a professional meeting. Papers, sessions, roundtables, etc. must clearly relate to Byzantine studies. Grants are limited to one per applicant in a one-year period.

Evaluation

Applications will be peer-reviewed by an external grants committee. The committee will assess the eligibility of the proposed activity and consider its merit. Preference will be given to applicants who have not received a grant in the previous two cycles, who have no or limited sources of funding, and who are participating in major national or international meetings.

Terms

Successful applicants will be reimbursed for eligible expenses up to the award amount. Eligible expenses include registration fees, lodging, meals, and transportation.

Recipients must submit the Request for Reimbursement Form and original receipts to the MJC no later than 30 days after the close of the conference. The MJC will consider grants forfeited if proper documentation is not submitted in a timely manner.

The names of recipients and their abstracts will be published on the MJC’s website.
