Byzantine chant - psaltiki - the unaccompanied psalmody of the Eastern Orthodox Church, inhabits a chronological space extending back to late antiquity and continuing to the present day. This lecture-workshop will provide an overview of Byzantine chant's thousand-year old written tradition and its relationship to oral practice, and how the two have interacted and influenced one another. Participants will be invited to sing along with the musical examples provided.
