Greek Folk and Contemporary Music (Jazz and Chamber)

Jazz pianist and composer Lefteris Kordis discusses techniques for composing original contemporary music rooted in Eastern Mediterranean folk music traditions.

This lecture-style workshop will focus on composing original contemporary music rooted in Eastern Mediterranean folk music traditions, particularly the musical traditions of Greece. Topics to be discussed include Eastern Mediterranean modes and western harmony, microtones, the dance element, improvisation as a ‘taxim’ and as a jazz solo, music as cultural identity in the era of globalization, and music as a diplomatic tool.

The workshop assumes prior basic knowledge of jazz and western European music theory and practice.
