“I Do Solemnly Swear”: Oaths in Long Late Antiquity, University of Hamburg, October 21–22, 2024

The research group ‘Loyalty Oaths in the Roman, Byzantine and Early Islamicate Legal Spheres’ (LORILS, 2023–24) is delighted to welcome proposals for an upcoming international hybrid conference on ‘Oaths in Long Late Antiquity’.

The conference will treat the themes of oaths, covenants, pacts, agreements, and loyalty in political and legal culture. Possible approaches include Legal History, Social History, Cultural History, and Language and Literature. The scope of the conference includes the Roman, Sasanian, Byzantine and early Islamic Empires, Judaism, Eastern Christianity and Latin Europe. Papers will be 20 minutes in duration, followed by discussion.

LORILS is a collaboration between members of the SCORE team and the Legal History Department at the University of Groningen.
