The deadline for contributions to the second version of the digital map of excavations and surveys in Türkiye (https://excavatingbyzantium.ku.edu.tr/) with Byzantine layers is 30 April 2025.

Koç University Sevgi Gönül Center for Byzantine Studies (GABAM) is creating a digital map of the active excavation and survey projects in Türkiye with Byzantine cultural layers. The project aims to provide a reliable source of information and is currently under progress.

Initially used as a digital interactive element at the GABAM’s 2023 exhibition “The Odyssey of Byzantine Studies in Turkey”, the map was prepared based on the permits for the year 2022 published by the T.R. Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

We currently host videos from Amorium, Balatlar Church, Myra-Andriake, Church of St. Nicholas at Demre, Olympos, Bathonea and Istanbul Archaeological Museums’ Boukoleon Palace, Haydarpaşa and Saraçhane (St. Polyeuktos Church) excavations.

We invite all excavation and survey projects who wish to share detailed data on their works at sites with Byzantine layers in Türkiye to send information on their webpages, prominent cultural layers along with images and/or videos.
